Brown Bags Cocopah WoO Win

The Wheatley Chronicles – Volume V, No. 11

Lonnie Wheatley, YUMA, Ariz. (April 7, 2017) – Brian Brown reeled in his third career World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car series win by wiring the field in Friday night’s 30-lap feature event as the series made its debut appearance at Cocopah Speedway for the Yuma Valley Showdown.

“I’ll take ‘em any way I can get ‘em,” Brown said of the $10,000 triumph aboard the FVP/Casey’s General Stores No. 21 Maxim, his first WoO win in over three years.

“This is awesome, we’ve had a rough couple of nights,” the driver from Grain Valley, MO, commented.

The race proved to be won in the Dash, where Brown emerged from an opening lap scramble to secure the pole position for the main event.

After outdueling fellow front row starter Jason Sides for the point on the opening round, Brown held off Donny Schatz over the final two-thirds of the race as rubber came into play early on.

Brown kept Schatz at bay as he tried to work through traffic and then had clear sailing for the final handful of circuits when the night’s only caution flew with 25 in the books.

After slipping by Sides for second on the tenth round, Schatz settled for runner-up honors in the Arctic Cat No. 15.  “We had a decent enough car to win, but the way the track worked out we needed to be another row forward.

Brad Sweet worked his way to the podium with Sides in fourth while Paul McMahan disposed of David Gravel and then Sheldon Haudenschild in the final five laps to round out the top five.
