Carney Notches Pair of Top Tens in ASCS Openers – PA Debut this Weekend

Lonnie Wheatley, EL PASO, Texas (May 3, 2019) – El Paso native John Carney II kicked off his rookie campaign with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour in strong form by notching a pair of top ten finishes in last week’s opening pair of events in Nebraska and Missouri.

This weekend brings Carney and the Sander Construction/South Plains Auto Transport/Mesilla Valley Transportation No. J2 Sprint Car team to central Pennsylvania for the first time with ASCS National Tour action at Mechanicsburg’s storied Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night and then Selinsgrove Speedway on Saturday night.

Last weekend’s pair of events resulted in a tenth-place finish in the ASCS National Tour season opener at Nebraska’s Eagle Raceway on Thursday night and then a seventh-place run at Cameron, Missouri’s U.S. 36 Raceway on Friday night.

“Our results didn’t really show how fast we were,” Carney summed up.  “Overall, it was a good weekend.”

The weekend began with Carney climbing from third to second in his heat race at Eagle Raceway on Thursday and then posting a tenth-place finish in the feature after starting eighth.

“We had a mechanical issue with the brakes and we were just a little bit off, we finished tenth but I felt like we should have been a few more spots up,” Carney commented.

Making his U.S. 36 Raceway debut on Friday, Carney won his heat race and then finished out the night seventh after starting eighth once again in the feature.

“We ran fifth or sixth most of the race,” Carney recalls.  “We had a restart and I lost some spots instead of gaining some like we did on the one before.”

Escaping the weekend sitting seventh in Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour points, Carney looks to build upon that with this weekend’s first visit to central Pennsylvania’s Williams Grove Speedway and Selinsgrove Speedway.

Quick Stats:  Races 3, Top-Tens 2.

Next Up: Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour at Williams Grove Speedway (Mechanicsburg, PA) on Friday and Selinsgrove (PA) Speedway on Saturday.
