Charles in Charge in Freedom Tour Opener at Lawton

The Wheatley Chronicles – Volume III, No. 71

Lonnie Wheatley, LAWTON, Okla. (August 19, 2015) – A frenzied rush from Brady Bacon in the closing laps wasn’t enough to prevent “Chargin’” Charles Davis, Jr., from topping the opening round of the Third Annual USAC Southwest Sprint Cars “Freedom Tour” at Lawton Speedway on Wednesday night.

After slipping by early leader Harli White on a lap 12 restart, the multi-time Arizona Sprint Car champ sweated out some fuel mileage concerns and then fought off Bacon over the final rounds of the 30-lapper to become just the second driver to post multiple Freedom Tour triumphs since its inception in 2013.

“I knew Brady was coming,” Davis, Jr., said in victory lane. “I was sputtering, I was about out of fuel when he about got me there. I was hoping they would go red for a fuel stop when that last caution flew.”

After nearly losing the lead to Bacon, who was rallying on the high side, Davis, Jr., got his wish with a fuel stop just two laps shy of the checkered flag and then held on over the final pair of rounds to pick up the win in the Massey Motorsports No. 50 entry.

Davis, Jr., had started the feature from the front row outside, but it pole starter White gunning into the early lead.

The young lady from Lindsay, OK, waded through several cautions in the early going as she tried to keep Davis, Jr., at bay.

With one pass for the lead negated by a caution after five laps, Davis, Jr., pounced on a lap 12 restart and raced into the lead through turns one and two.

In his wake, Bacon went to work at the same time by climbing from fifth on the lap 12 restart by battling past Casey Shuman, Mike Martin and then White into second by the 17th round.

But with Davis, Jr., gone, Bacon had to wait until a lap 25 caution to begin his challenges for the point. And just when it looked like he might slip by, a final caution flew that set up a two-lap dash to the stripe after a splash of fuel.

Bacon settled for second behind the Chargin’ one with Shuman making his way past White with just five laps to go to fill out the podium. White was fourth with R.J. Johnson charging from eight rows deep to round out the top five.
