No Stopping Schatz – Makes it 18 with Lakeside Win

The Wheatley Chronicles – Volume III, No. 56

Lonnie Wheatley, KANSAS CITY, Kan. (July 1, 2015) – No dash, no problem. At least no problem for Donny Schatz.

For the second race in a row and first time in World of Outlaws history with a Dash format, Schatz missed the Dash and then went on to victory lane.

This time, it was with a lap 28 pass of race-long leader Joey Saldana to win Wednesday night’s 30-lapper atop the ½-mile Lakeside Speedway clay oval.

The triumph marked Schatz’ 18th World of Outlaws triumph of the year aboard the TSR Bad Boy Buggies No. 15 Sprint Car.

“The car was so even once the fuel load burned off, the car was probably the fastest it had been all night on the green-white-checkered at the end,” Schatz said.

While Schatz had taken the lead just prior to the second and final caution, it was the first one just prior to the midway point that gave him life.

Working forward from the tenth starting position, Schatz wasted little time cracking the top five and had just battled past pole starter David Gravel and Paul McMahan to move into third after a dozen laps.

But, at that point, Joey Saldana was gone. Long gone in the Motter No. 71m.

Saldana’s straightaway was erased in the blink of an eye when Brian Brown rolled to a stop with 13 laps in the books.

Schatz made quick work of “The Madman”, Kerry Madsen, on the restart to take over second and went after Saldana.

The Brownsburg Bullet kept Schatz at bay, fending off several challenges as traffic came into play. But Schatz’ tenacity paid off, with the North Dakota driver nearly pulling even upon the completion of the 27th lap and racing into the lead for good on the low side of turns one and two.

A final caution did nothing to slow Schatz, who commended crew chief Ricky Warner and company in victory lane.

“They give me such a good car, they should be the ones up here talking,” Schatz said.

Schatz offered some insight as to how the No. 15 seemingly gains speed throughout the race. “These tires will fall off if you abuse them. I try to take care of them early and it gets faster as the race goes on.”

Saldana held second to the stripe with Madsen in the show position. Danny Lasoski nipped McMahan at the line for fourth.
