RJ Johnson Takes Final El Paso Checkered Flag

EL PASO, Texas (September 2, 2016) – The curtains came down upon El Paso Speedway Park, closing under the title banner of Western Tech Speedway Park, with R.J. Johnson racing to victory lane in the 30-lap USAC Southwest Sprint Cars “Border Tour” feature event.

While Johnson added his ninth overall series win of the year aboard the Bill Michaels’ Ford-powered Kodiak Products/Beal’s Auto Body No. 77m Sherman-chassis, it was Lorne Wofford putting a whipping on the 305-ci field to finish off the El Paso Speedway Park that opened in 1979.

Johnson had to work for another USAC Southwest win after starting the feature from the eighth. While Johnson worked forward in short order, Mike Martin outgunned pole starter Chris Bonneau for the lead at the outset and paced the opening dozen circuits.

The three-time and reigning series champion battled past Martin for the point on the 13th round and then held off Charles Davis, Jr., over the closing rounds to secure the victory with Rick Ziehl rounding out the podium in third after contact sent Martin for a turn two spin with just three laps to go.

Bonneau raced across the stripe fourth with Landon Cling advancing from 12th to round out the top five.

While shaken, Dylan Harris walked away after exiting the park in a wild ride outside of turns one and two midway through the feature.

Dennis Gile, Davis, Jr., and Randy Smith topped heat race action for the 25-car field.
