Saldana Too Strong at Jacksonville

The Wheatley Chronicles – Volume IV, No. 15

Lonnie Wheatley, JACKSONVILLE, Ill. (May 4, 2016) – Tuesday night’s World of Outlaws appearance was almost a pure night of Joey Saldana domination over a field of 46 competitors.

Except for those few laps in the opening half of the 40-lap feature where it looked like Aaron Reutzel might steal away the win for his first career WoO triumph. And Shane Stewart and Brad Sweet refused to go away as well.

Saldana regrouped though and paced the final 23 circuits around the tight, ¼-mile clay oval to capture his third series win of the year aboard the Roth Motorsports No. 83, fending off advances from Stewart and current points leader Sweet along the way.

“We actually fell back to third there at one point, I just had to regroup and get going again,” Saldana commented afterward.

After Reutzel slid past Saldana to take command as the leaders reached traffic on the tenth round, Stewart momentarily slipped by Saldana as well the next time around.

Saldana made his way back around Stewart soon after then recaptured the lead when Reutzel slapped the wall exiting turn four on the 18th round. Reutzel pounded the turn four concrete again the next time around, opening the door for Stewart to race into second.

With the top three dicing through traffic on an extended 22-lap green flag run, the red flag flew after 24 laps when Spencer Bayston got into the turn one wall and flipped. It was the World of Outlaws debut for the accomplished Midget shoe.

Three cautions fell over the remaining 16 circuits with Saldana denying all challenges to pick up the win.

“The cautions fell right for us,” Saldana commented.

In Saldana’s wake, Stewart and Sweet swapped positions a number of times with 16th-starter Donny Schatz joining in on the battle over the closing laps.

Stewart ultimately captured the runner-up position in the Larson-Marks No. 2 in his first Jacksonville start since a memorable triumph in the 2010 edition of the Shaheen at Jacksonville.

Sweet crossed the stripe in third, with another Schatz charge from deep in the field ending at fourth. Reutzel denied Daryn Pittman’s challenges over the final circuits to round out the top five.

That actually proved fortuitous for Saldana, as the Dash invert of eight put him on the pole for the Dash. A dash win then preceded the feature win; The first heat got off to a shake start when Hunter Schuerenberg got upside down in a turn four scruffle that also included Jake Blackhurst with Kody Kinser then dumping it on the backstretch as the field slowed; Jimmy Bridgeman flipped in turn two four laps into the second heat.

C Main Winner (starting position in parentheses): Parker Price-Miller (2).

C Main Moments: While PPM was in command throughout, David Gravel outdueled Brady Bacon for the second and final transfer.

28 Laps – Jason Johnson spins in turn three.
