Short Stands Tall in ISW Round Four at Putnamville

The Wheatley Chronicles – Volume IV, No. 30

Lonnie Wheatley, PUTNAMVILLE, Ind. (July 14, 2016) – Brady Short made the most of his first USAC Indiana Sprintweek start of 2016 by charging from six rows deep to win Thursday night’s 30-lap feature at Lincoln Park Speedway.

After sitting out the opening three legs of Sprintweek, Short needed just a dozen laps to race from the 11th starting position into the lead en route to his seventh overall win of the year aboard the Indiana Stone Works/Sipes Body & Glass No. 11p Sprint Car.

“I’m horrible at qualifying, so it was really important to time in 11th to put us in a position where we had a chance,” Short said afterward. “It’s tough when you have 50 cars and probably 30 are capable of winning.”

His rivals definitely needed him deeper in the field, as he broke into second by the tenth lap and then took the lead away from Dave Darland two laps later before driving away to nearly a half lap advantage once out front, leaving a wild battle for position in his wake.

A flurry of late cautions in the final handful of laps gave race-long chasers Chase Stockon, Darland and Chad Boespflug false hope, as Short checked out each time to secure his seventh career USAC National Sprint Car feature win and fifth during Sprintweek.

Stockon fought off a host of challengers to take runner-up honors with Boespflug rounding out the podium in third. Robert Ballou rallied from 16th to fourth with Thomas Meseraull picking up Hard Charger honors in his first night aboard the Landon Simon No. 24 by racing from 18th to round out the top five.

After running among the top four for the opening 25 laps, Darland got shuffled back to tenth in the closing laps as a gaggle of cars jockeyed for final positioning.

Leary (third) and Chad Boespflug (fifth) among later qualifiers to sneak in a good qualifying time; Quick-timer at Putnamville on July 1, Josh Hodges couldn’t get his car to run on his initial attempt and had one lap at the end in which he pounded the turn two cushion too hard and barely avoided a big crash, timing in officially at 48th.
