Reutzel Sheds Wings after another Win
Lonnie Wheatley, CLUTE, Texas (November 3, 2015) – Going wingless. It’s something the newly-crowned Lucas Oil ASCS National champion hasn’t had a chance to do in nearly a year.
But, with a big assist from El Paso’s Casa Nissan, that’s exactly what Aaron Reutzel and the Shark-powered BC Fundz/Basic One Services No. 87 Triple X Sprint Car team will be doing this weekend as the Clute, TX, racer sets his sights on the $10,000-to-win prize at Southern New Mexico Speedway’s Inaugural Richard Griffin Classic.
“I’m looking forward to it, we haven’t had a chance to take the wing off in a while,” Reutzel said. “It has been hectic racing for points all year, this weekend is all about racing for fun and with Casa Nissan’s partnership, hopefully we can take that ten grand.”
Reutzel and the Wren Motorsports/Momentum Racing Suspensions team come in on a strong note after winning the Thursday night portion of a weather-plagued Short Track Nationals at Little Rock’s I-30 Speedway. Reutzel was the only winner of the weekend other than Mother Nature, with the other three nights falling victim to rain.
And the twelfth overall win of the year for the driver of the Dissolvealloy Frac Ball Revolution machine came in dramatic fashion with a rally from the 13th starting position and a high-side pass of Jac Haudenschild in the closing laps to take the $3,000 win.
“To get around Jac on the outside on a track like this just doesn’t happen very often, this one is special,” Reutzel said after yet another I-30 triumph.
With that 12th win of the year putting an exclamation point on the $60,000 Lucas Oil ASCS National championship, Reutzel and the Danny Sander Construction/ButlerBuilt team now roll down the road towards Las Cruces in search of wingless loot.
While Reutzel isn’t a frequent competitor in the non-wing ranks, it’s something that he has shown some acumen for in previous outings aboard the Lone Star Hydro Maintenance/Wright Way Logistics Sprint Car.
He topped last year’s preliminary event in wingless action at Southern New Mexico Speedway and led much of the way in the finale only to have tire problems late in the going deny him the $10,000 score.
It’s a win he wants to get back.
“We were so close last year, that one was heartbreaking,” Reutzel says. “We’re there to have fun this weekend. But, don’t doubt for a second, we want to be the first winner of the Richard Griffin Classic and take the $10,000 that goes with it.”
The Inaugural Richard Griffin Classic at Southern New Mexico Speedway kicks off with the first of two qualifying nights on Thursday before wrapping up with Saturday night’s $10,000-to-win finale.
