Championship Weekend for Lucas Oil ASCS Heads For Arizona

TULSA, Okla. (November 8, 2016) The chase to the 2016 Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network Championship has come down to one final weekend as the series returns to the Cocopah Speedway in Somerton, Ariz. on Friday, November 11 and Saturday, November 12.

Beginning with a Press Conference at 3:00 P.M. (MT) on Thursday, November 10 at the Cocopah Wild River, located just across the track, the final two nights of the 25th season of ASCS competition opens Friday at 5:00 P.M. with racing at 7:00 P.M. (MT). Times are good for both nights.

Rolling into the final National Tour double-header of the 2016 season, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. will look to put the final nail in his bid for the season ending $60,000 champion’s check. Holding a 240 point advantage over New Mexico’s Johnny Herrera going into the weekend, Sam can breathe easier than most but must still make it to Saturday’s finale in order to seal the deal.

In an article about Hafertepe from his publicist, Bill Wright (@BillWMedia), Sam talked about the coming weekend saying, “We pretty much just have to be there, but we don’t race that way,” he says. “We’re going down there to try and sweep the weekend. Yuma should be a really good track for us with the way our car’s been performing this year. We’re looking forward to getting down there.”

Wayne Johnson holds third in tour standings. The show position finish in tour standings will be the eighth time since 1993 that Wayne has finished in the top-five in tour standings, and tenth inside the top-ten. Holding fourth is Blake Hahn. The finish is the highest the third generation driver has ever achieved with the National Tour. For fifth running, Matt Covington, the final spot in the top-five is the second year the No. 95 has done so.

Logan Forler holds with Aaron Reutzel trailing. Missing the J.C.T. Creek County Fall Fling, that has brought Seth Bergman to within 16 points of the seventh points position following a pair of podiums at Creek County. Also missing the Fall Fling, Josh Baughman has allowed Kyle Bellm to close within 10 markers of moving to ninth on the season standings.

Paired with the Carlyle Tools ASCS Southwest Region, this weekend at Cocopah Speedway is one step close to the close of the series 2016 season as four nights remain for the Arizona based tour. Rick Ziehl holds a slim 17 point advantage over Colton Hardy with Bob Ream, Jr. only 44 points behind in third. Lance Norick and Casey Buckman make up the top-five.

Tickets for this weekend’s event are on sale at http://www.cocopahspeedway.com or fans can purchase tickets at the gate.
